Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei

Tagging Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei as school comedy is pretty misleading I guess, but these are the only tags of mine that match so far. It’s misleading because, well, if one images a school comedy I don’t think that there would be a suicidal teacher who sees everything and everyone in the worse kind of light in the picture. And a girl who faces the worst things but interprets everything in a positive way, a rude foreigner girl who’s second personality is the ultimative Japanese woman, a female hikikomori who turns up in the strangest places at school and an always injured girl with some, uh, unique taste might be individually part of the student canon, but wouldn’t be that canon. And these are just a few examples of the female students who populate the (school) world of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.
The style and atmosphere of this anime could be best described as Negima!? meets Welcome to the N.H.K., which unfortunately also means that the random stuff that already made Negima!? rather hard to follow sees a comeback, but at least for me it worked pretty well to just ignore the stuff written on the blackboard.

Altogether a quite amusing freak show, and with the introduction episodes slowly coming to an end I’m curious what kind of story will develop now.

  1. I think you got the summary right although you probably would make people want to watch it more if you included the dark secrets that the positive girl has my i remind you of the episode where she tells the girl who does nothing but text messaging to talk to people through their eyes and when she looks into the positive girl’s eyes she sees “kill kill kill kill kill kill kill kill kill kill …”.

  2. Good point, but there is just too much good stuff to write about if I’d start to include more details.

  3. Sorry to say this… but this was a pretty poor review. All you did was describe some characters and say that it is a mix of two shows..

You need to add more detail to your writing.. give some examples of humor within the show, for example.. the stalkers.

    Also… it is Hikikomori…

  4. Thx, I’ll try to make it better next time, but I’m not into writing that much, so think about it more like a teaser than a real review.

  5. Yes, it is somewhat a teaser(even though it appears that this was after the second episode, if I remember correctly). I also dislike writing, but I still believe in giving readers what they came to read.

Also, whats with “suizidal”? Was that intended for younger viewers?

  6. Sorry, meant of course “suicidal”. One example where the word in my native language is too similar to the English one.

  7. You should tag it as a Harem comedy. That’s really closer to what the show is.

  8. You might be right, but I guess harem comedy is as misleading as school comedy is here.

  9. Dude those pics were rad I wish I could draw like that did u teach ur self?
