Sayonara Zetsubou SenseiAugust 13, 2007
Tagging Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei as school comedy is pretty misleading I guess, but these are the only tags of mine that match so far. It’s misleading because, well, if one images a school comedy I don’t think that there would be a suicidal teacher who sees everything and everyone in the worse kind of light in the picture. And a girl who faces the worst things but interprets everything in a positive way, a rude foreigner girl who’s second personality is the ultimative Japanese woman, a female hikikomori who turns up in the strangest places at school and an always injured girl with some, uh, unique taste might be individually part of the student canon, but wouldn’t be that canon. And these are just a few examples of the female students who populate the (school) world of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.
The style and atmosphere of this anime could be best described as Negima!? meets Welcome to the N.H.K., which unfortunately also means that the random stuff that already made Negima!? rather hard to follow sees a comeback, but at least for me it worked pretty well to just ignore the stuff written on the blackboard.
Altogether a quite amusing freak show, and with the introduction episodes slowly coming to an end I’m curious what kind of story will develop now.
