Things I’ve seen

August 27, 2006

For my first entry I thought it could be a good idea to list all the anime series I watched this far. And yes, I have way to much time to watch anime as can be seen. The recommencing is purely from my personal view, feel free to ignore them if you like. Some spoilers ahead, you have been warned!

Ah! My GoddessUrd, Skuld & Belldandy

5 OVA Episodes, 1 Movie, 26 TV Episodes

Genres: Comedy, Fantasy, Harem, Romance

Keiichi Morisato is a typical loser studying in his first year at the Nekomi Institute of Technology. One night he phones for a pizza, but gets the goddess Belldandy instead. Life could be a blast, but before Keiichi and Belldandy can get to close (for this kind of anime) the goddess family kicks in.

This series is recommended.

Ah! My Goddess: Being Small is ConvenientSD Urd, SD Belldandy & SD Skuld

48 Episodes (8 Minutes each)

Genres: Comedy, Fantasy

The Goddesses are back, but now they are in SD and they are on a rampage. Poor Keiichi is replaced by a rat which is even more of a loser.

This series is recommended.

Ai Yori AoshiKaoru, Miyabi, Chika, Aoi, Taeko, Tina & Mayu

2×24 Episodes

Genres: Comedy, Drama, Harem, Romance, School Life

A series which could have been so much better if the tune of the first few episodes would have been extended on the whole series. Sadly it ends in another more or less standard harem comedy with some drama poured in and a female lead character (Aoi) which devotion to the male protagonist (Kaoru) always gives me the creeps. But at least Kaoru is not that much of a typical loser and in the end of the first season they finally get laid (as far as I can tell).

This series is recommended.

AirMisuzu

13 Episodes, 1 Movie

Genres: Drama, Mystery, Romance

Hmmm, don’t really know what to say about the story of this series. In the beginning it very similar to Kanon (boy comes to town, meets lots of girls with one deep problem each and solves these problems), but when it is time to solve the problem of the female lead character the anime goes nuts. Maybe it is brilliant, maybe it just sucks, I don’t know. The ride was fun, the end was not. Felt sorry for the other girls, their screen time dropped drastically after their problems were solved. By the way, the nearly empty town was kind of creepy.

This series is recommended.

Angelic LayerMisaki & Hikaru

26 Episodes

Genres: Action, Comedy, Sci-Fi

Little girls (and some boys) which fight via cute little dolls against each other in tournaments. Bug using is allowed, cheating is not. A bit of romance, a bit of drama, some comedy and a lot cute girl(doll)s beating the shit outa each other. Entertaining.

This series is recommended.

Side note: In the manga is a reference to Chobits, and in the manga of Card Captor Sakura was a reference to Angelic Layer. Neat little details.

Azumanga Daioh(most of the) Girls of Azumanga Daioh

26 Episodes, 1 (very short) Movie

Genres: Comedy, School Life

Azumanga Daioh is school comedy at its best. It is about a bunch of girls (and their teachers) living though 3 years of high school filled with awesomeness. Boys are practical non-existence, so no romance (in this way) happens, but isn’t missed either. There is very little character development in the process of the anime, which is no flaw because it isn’t needed (other good examples: Peanuts, Garfield), but an advantage since the series becomes very rewatchable this way.

This series is highly recommended.

Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chanDokuro-chan

8 Episodes

Genres: Comedy, School Life, Violent/Gore

Cute little Angel Dokuro-chan is send back in time to kill Sakura Kusakabe in order to prevent him to create a technology that will stop girls aging after their 12 birthday. Instead of killing him (permanently) she decides to change the future in some other way. The combination of a very temperamental character and the big club “Excalibolg” Dokuro owns results in many very bloody dead scenes primary for Sakura, but the good news is that Dokuro-chan can resurrect with her club. After short while other Angels appear to do the job Dokuro-chan won’t do. Good fun for in between and through the length of only 8 Episodes the fun in seeing so much dead of Sakura is not “clubbed to death”. Also interesting how much references are made in the course of the anime.

This series is recommended.

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor MoonThe inner senshis in plainclothes

200 TV Episodes, 5 Special Episodes, 3 Movies

Genres: Action, Comedy, Drama, Fantasy, Romance, School Life

Well, its Sailor Moon. Hate it or love it. I for myself had very much fun watching it. The standard monster-of-the-day concept sucks, but the part of the series where no monster is to fight (and no Chibiusa is in sight) consists of good entertainment. Also like the self-mockery that takes place sometimes.

This series is recommended.

ChobitsHideki & Chii

Genres: Comedy, Drama, Romance, Sci-Fi

26 TV Episodes, 2 Special Episodes

In the not so distant future computers are made in shape of (cute) humans. County boy Hideki, new in town, finds a female shaped one of these lying on the street and takes her home. After turning her on by pushing the right spot it comes to the realization that the OS is missing and all she can say is “Chii”. Hideki (very uninspired) names her this way and a story of drama, romance, comedy and much cuteness unfolds.

This series is recommended.

Chrno CrusadeChrno & Rosette

Genres: Action, Fantasy, Historical

24 Episodes

Combat nun helped by a demon protecting the world of the thirties against all the other demons. Comedy in the beginning, drama in the end. Enjoyable the whole time.

This series is recommended.

Comic PartyGirls, girls, girls

Genres: Comedy, Harem

2×13 TV Episodes, 4 Special Episodes

Story of a boy who wants to make his stand in the cruel world of doujinshi. Soon he is surrounded by girls, girls, girls (but no real romance happens, just jealousy of his first “girlfriend” because of his time-consuming new hobby).

This series is recommended.

Cowboy BebopFaye Valentine

26 Episodes, 1 Movie

Genres: Action, Comedy, Drama, Sci-Fi

First class space opera with hilarious comedy and touching drama going hand in hand. The major and minor characters are well-crafted, the Action rockz and the music is as beautiful as varied. Watch it! ’nuff said.

This series is highly recommended.

Digi CharatRabi~en~Rose, Digi Charat & Panyo Charat

16 TV Episodes (5 Minutes each), 13 Special Episodes, 1 Movie

Genres: Comedy

Little gem of the anime world. Digi Charat, princess of the planet Digi Charat, comes to earth to become a idol singer, but ends working at Gamers together with her sidekick Panyo Charat. She can fire lightning beam with her eyes which she does a lot if she gets angry. Her rival on earth becomes the bunny-dressed Rabi~en~Rose (Digi Charat calls her always by her real name Hikaru Usada) who is working at Gamers, too. There is no real story, but much random fun and enjoyment in each episode.

This series is highly recommended.

Dual! Parallel Trouble AdventureDual Friends & Foe

14 Episodes

Genres: Action, Comedy, Harem, Mecha, Sci-Fi

Enjoyable series about a boy (Kazuki), who pilots a mecha to fight other mechas and has a aggressive & egoistical girl and a shy & mysterious girl as sisters-in-arms. Sounds a bit like Neon Genesis Evangelion? You bet. But this time it is all about comedy, the enemy is the human RaRa-(or LaLa-)Army and everything is happening in a parallel world. Note: A good way to attract girls is the controlling of a big mecha of mass destruction.

This series is recommended.

Early ReinsGirls with Guns

1 Episode

Genres: Action, Historical

A Wild West robbery on a train protected by six girls. Nice idea, but poorly executed.

This one is not recommended.

Earth Defender Mao-chanMisora-chan, Mao-chan & Silvia-chan

26 Episodes

Genres: Comedy

Three little school girls defending the world (or at least Japan) against (much too) cute alien invaders. Excellent reason why the girls (and not the regular army) have to protect the planet, the live-size model of a Tiger Tank and the defence of Love Hina’s Hinata-sou (plus guest appearance of Naru) are just a few reasons why I enjoyed this series very much. This anime is clearly made for children, but can also be fun for other people.

This series is recommended.

Elfen LiedNyuu-chan, Yuka & Kouta

13 TV Episodes, 1 Special Episode

Genres: Action, Comedy, Drama, Violent/Gore

Cute girls with horns ripping their bloody way through life with invisible arms (so called “vectors”). Few are nice, the most are bad and one of them is Lucy. After shot in the head and fallen in the ocean (all naked) she lost her memory and turns into a nice and cute girl only able to say “Chii” “Nyuu”. Kouta (similar uninspired as Hideki) takes poor(ly named) Nyuu-chan into custody, not knowing what evil lies beyond (but I guess that is what you get when you take home a cute, naked and bloody girl coming out of the ocean with the capability of speaking only one word). Great combination of cuteness and splatter.

This series is highly recommended.

Fate/stay nightSaber(-chan)

24 Episodes

Genres: Action, Drama, Fantasy, Harem

Seven magician on the last crusade to obtain the holy grail, this time not against some pagans, but against each. Each magician has a legendary hero or creature as servant to help him in his quest, last one standing gets the grail and there is no medal for second place. Shiro Emiya is one of the chosen magician although he doesn’t even know that he is a magic-user and isn’t willing to kill anyone. His servant is Saber, a sword-wielding goddess of knighthood, with an attitude that differs a bit from her masters. Whose point of view will be the right one?
This series is recommended.

Final ApproachPotential birth rate raiser

13 Episodes (12 Minutes each)

Genres: Comedy, Harem, Romance, School Life

Ryo, happily living with his sister Akane, is suddenly forced by the Japanese government to marriage cute Shizuka (birth rate is low, ya know). Entertaining little show, finished fast and forgotten soon after.

This series is recommended.

Full Metal Panic!Kurtz, Theresa, Chidori & Sosuke

24 TV Episodes, 15 TV Episodes (var duration), 13 TV Episodes, 1 OVA Episode

Genres: Action, Comedy, Mecha, School Life, Sci-Fi

Second Leuitenant Sagara, elite soldier of Mithril, a independent organisation to fight terrorism, receives the order to secretly protect Chidori Kaname, a normal japanese school-girl at first glance. Sagara, not accustomed to the life as a student, soon drives poor Chidori nuts with his odd and violent behavior, but after a short while Sagara becomes his chance to shine.
Action anime mixed with school romance that is at its best when its all about comedy.

This series is highly recommended.

Full Moon wo sagashiteMitsuki & Meroko

52 TV Episodes, 1 Special Episode

Genres: Drama, Fantasy

The story about the 12 years old girl Mitsuki whose dream to become a singer (to fulfil a promised she made 2 years before with the boy she loves) is shattered by throat cancer. One day two Shinigami (Gods of Death) appear before her and tell her that she got only 1 year left to life. Mitsuki, shocked that now she definitely won’t be able to keep her promise, convinces them to help her in becoming a famous singer for at least this last year of her life. Very funny, very sad, very touching (and great music, too).

This series is highly recommended.

Fushigi YuugiYui, Nakago, Tamahome & Miaka

52 TV Episodes, 13 OVA Episodes

Genres: Action, Comedy, Drama, Fantasy, Romance

Miaka and Yui discover a strange book in their local library, the “The Universe of the four gods”. As they read the first pages they both get sucked in the book. While Yui soon returns to the real world, Miaka gets left behind and becomes part of the story. Through reading on Yui can follow Miakas adventures in this new and strange world. At the beginning very much comedy, but the series gets much more dramatic at the time Miaka and Yui switch sides. Yuis experiences in the other world are much worse than Miakas.

This series is highly recommended.

FutakoiNozumu & all the twins

13 Episodes

Genres: Comedy, Harem, Romance, School Life

How to make a standard harem comedy twice as good? Futakois answer: Twins. Unfortunately, this answer is wrong. So we are left with the average series of this kind with some highs and a lot downs (the damn goat sucks so bad you can hear it!). Could have been better if they explored the rising inner-twin conflicts more. None the less watchable, especially to see how much better the next series is.

This series is recommended.

Futakoi AlternativeSara & Soju

13 Episodes

Genres: Action, Comedy, Drama, Romance

The “other” Futakoi series, much better than the “unalternative” one in all aspects. The focus of the story lies on the most interesting twins (Sara & Soju) and the male protagonist Rentaro. All the other twins appear as supporting characters. Rentaro inherits a detective agency from his famous father, but has to less ambitions to reach the level of his father. The arrival of Sara & Soju and their job request change his life. Well made anime with frequent jumps in pace and atmosphere.

This series is highly recommended.

Ginban KaleidoscopeTazusa & Peet

12 Episodes

Genres: Comedy, Romance, Sport

Tazusa is a gifted figure skater training for the next japanese delegation selection for the Olympics. She is not very popular because of her difficult character and has problems to show her real talent. One day she gets haunted by the ghost of a canadian stunt pilot, Peet, who has to stay on earth for 100 days because of some technical problems at heavens gate. At first Tazusa is (understandably) very angry about this, but after short while Peet proves to be a valuably addition to her life.

This series is recommended.

Gokudou-kun ManyuukiRubette

26 Episodes

Genres: Action, Comedy, Fantasy

Gokudou is our typical fantasy swordsman hero … not. He is a ill-mannered antihero who only thinks about his own advantage in all he does. Strangly enough he often ends up doing the right thing (somehow). With his sidekicks Djinn, a *gasp* genie, and Rubette, a princess to her own dislike, he does the adventures the “Gokudoun-way” (Good thing that the major part of the lame farting-jokes is centred in the first few episodes).

This series is recommended.

Gunbusterda gunbusta crew

6 Episodes

Genres: Action, Drama, Mecha, Sci-Fi

Early work of GAINAX. Humankind fights against an alien species in giant spaceships and mechas. A classic which considers the relativistic time dilatation through near-light-speed space travel.

This series is recommended.

Gunslinger GirlHenrietta

13 Episodes

Genres: Action, Drama

Young girls, fated to die, are brainwashed and “upgraded” with mechanical body parts to help a secret italian organisation to fight crime and terrorism. They can kill now with any hesitation, but the stress their body and mind are exposed to might be too much for them to handle. Interesting series that is much too short.
This series is highly recommended.

Gunsmith CatsRally

3 Episodes

Genres: Action, Comedy

Rally Vincent and Minnie May are running a weapon shop in good old Chicago. Their “hobby” is bounty hunting through which they gain some mighty enemies on the other side of the law. Major Radinov, a former KGB agent, is one of them and she knows how to give these two girls a hard time. Action packed anime, fun to watch.

This series is highly recommended.

Haibane RenmaiRakka

13 Episodes

Genres: Drama, Fantasy, Mystery

In a town surrounded by a giant wall people get “born” out of cocoons. They don’t know anything about their past except for a dream they had while they were in the cocoon. After short time a pair of wings grow out of their back and a halo is given to them. They are called Haibane. The story is focused on Rakka, a newly hatched Haibane, and her experiences in this world.
A calm and very fascinating anime. Just beautiful.

This series is highly recommended.

Hand Maid MayMay-chan

10 TV Episodes, 1 Special Episode

Genres: Comedy, Harem, Romance, School Life

Kazuya, a electrical engineering student, lives a normal loser life with the sportive girl next door, Kasumi, in love with him (yeah, who wouldn’t love a computer geek). One day (though certain circumstances) he makes an orders about some unknown hardware by Cyberdyne (also proudly producer of Skynet, for a better and safer tomorrow). The packet he gets delivered shortly after contains no pocket sized terminator, but a 1/6 scaled robot maid, May, to be of his service from now on (pretty useless, but very cute). To recollect May (Kazuya can’t pay the bill) Cyberdyne sends robot maid after robot maid to Kazuya, but the geek-charm works also on robots and they all decide to switch sides. Funny, but not much more.

This series is recommended.

Hellsing

alucarD & Celas Victoria

13 TV Episodes, 1 OVA Episode

Genres: Action, Fantasy, Horror, Violent/Gore

This is all so wrong. Could have been so much better if they concentrated the story on Celas Victoria and her struggle with becoming a vampire or if they had used the time for some more character development of the “good” characters or if they had used interesting enemies or… or… or… . But Hellsing only consist of a lot undead wannabe bigass enemies who butcher their way through lots of poor humans until alucarD, the real bigass in the army of undead, gets his lame ass up and shows them that “There is ALWAYS a Bigger fish”. Horrorsplatter well done can be a lot of fun, put Hellsing is just plain boring.

This series is not recommended.

Idol ProjectMimu & a bunny girl

4 Episodes

Genres: Action, Comedy, Sci-Fi

Mimu wants to become one of the “Excellent Idols” who are adored through the whole galaxy. After much misfortune she stands on the stage to begin her audition, but at this point all hell broke loose and everything goes nuts. Confusing, but strangely entertaining anime about… whatever.

This series is recommended.

InterludeAya

3 Episodes

Genres: Action, Drama, Mystery

Something seems to be wrong at school. Foreshadowing dreams, shadows tearing away from the body of students and a woman armed with a bow appearing at night are just some of the strange events that take place. Are these events supernatural or is maybe with reality itself something wrong?
Enthralling anime, sadly with some misplaced fanservice.

This series is highly recommended.

Schoolgirl Kagome can travel to the (demon infested) feudal era of Japan through a magic well. Here she has to recollect the powerful fragments of the jewel “Shikon no Tama” (shattered by her own fault) together with the half-demon Inuyasha whose history is closely connected with this jewel.

This series is highly recommended.

This series is recommended.

Karekano (Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou)Arima & Yukino

26 Episode

Genres: Comedy, Drama, Romance, School Life

Yukino Miyazawa is adored by her classmates for her grades and her style. She is friendly, helpful and perfect in anything she does. In short she is the number one student in her school or would be if Arima Soujiro wouldn’t be at her school, too. He is the male counterpart to her and is sometimes even better than she is. This fact drives her nuts because she worked very hard to build up this image of her. Her real self is more or less the opposite of her “school-self”. She made up this image because she longs for the admiration of the other people and is not willing to share it with Arima. So she begins to work against Arima to retrieve the position of been the only number one at school, but her plan backfires when Arima discovers her secret of her real self. He takes advantage of this knowledge and forces Yukino to do all kind of work for him, but soon their relationship changes. And maybe Yukino is not the only one with a secret.
Very fascinating anime with much interesting characters development. Unfortunately there is an open ending which is a bit unsatisfying.

This series is highly recommended.

Kiddy GradeEclair & Lumiere

24 Episodes

Genres: Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

Eclair and Lumiere are working for G.O.T.T. (what a decent name, can anyone spell “Hybris”?), a secret organisation to keep the peace in the interstellar Union that mankind created. At the beginning everything is fluffy, but after short while it becomes clear that something is wrong with G.O.T.T. (short for Galactic Organization of Trade and Traffic, just in the case you are interested). The first half of the show is okay, the second one becomes very confusing, but all in all a show that can be enjoyed.

This series is recommended.

Kimi ga Nozomu EienShinji, Haruka, Mizuki & Takayuki

13 Episodes

Genres: Drama, Romance, School Life

At start a fairly normal school romance anime, but soon turns out to be a bit different.

This series is recommended.

Konomini (Kono Minikuku mo Utsukushii Sekai)KonoMinis

13 Episodes

After observing a strange light phenomenon in the sky Takeru finds a glowing cocoon from that a girl hatches. Soon after this girl is attacked by a monster, but luckily Takeru suddenly got some super powers on his own and can fight off the monster without killing it (that does the girl in an unwatched moment, maybe she is a bit more than just cute). Takeru takes the girl under his protection and names her Hikari (damn, sometimes it seems like Tomo from Azumanga Daioh is choosing all these names!). Soon it will be seen that there are more monsters after Hikaris life, maybe for a good reason?

This series is recommended.

Love HinaNaru Narusegawa

25 TV Episodes, 5 OVA Episodes

Soon he gets to know that the hotel of his grandmother is now an all-girls dormitory and the girls, particulary Naru Narusegawa who he suprised in the hot springs, are more than unwilling to let him stay. His grandmother however wants to go on vacation and decides to make Keitaro the residential manager. Now he can stay, but has to work a lot beside his studies and the girls don’t seem to want to make his life any easier either. But somehow he might prevail and meet his sweetheart (whose name and face has been forgotten by Keitaro, d’oh!) from the past again.
The best (and first) harem comedy anime I have seen and the manga is even better.

This series is highly recommended.

Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na KotoYume
~ Someday’s Dreamers ~

12 Episodes

Genres: Drama, Fantasy

“Someday’s Dreamers” shows how our world could be if magic truly exists. There are not that much differences to our world, magic is merely another way problems can be solved. All the magicians need a licence to use magic legally. Yume Kikuchi, a 17 years old girl, is the “heroine” of the story. She travels to Tokyo to become a Mage and learns that pure magic is often no answer for the problems of the humans.
Can’t really say what went wrong with this series. The characters are likeable, the world is interesting and I often like calm storytelling, but watching “Someday’s Dreamers” I had problems staying awake and following the story at the same time. Sadly, I have to say:

Mai-OtomeThe alternative Mashiro

26 Episodes

Genres: Action, Drama, Fantasy, School Life

A similar story to Mai-Hime, but this time on a different planet, most of the girls wear maiden outfits and it is altogether not as exciting as the first season. None the less interesting and enjoyable even if it is only to see the characters from Hime behave in different ways.

Genres: Action, Drama, Mystery

Mireille and Kirika are living in Paris and work as professional assassins under the pseudonym “Noir” (this word is one of the few things Kirika can remember from the time before she was working with Mireille, the true meaning is unknown to her). Few stand a chance against them, but while their research of Kirikas past it will be slowly revealed that “Noir” is much more than just a nice nickname for assassins and that they have some connection to powerful forces which motivations are yet to be discovered.
A dark and atmospheric anime with a high bodycount (sometimes with a bit to much Stormtrooper effect), but barely any blood. The pace is a bit slow at the beginning, but soon the story gets very enthralling.

This series is highly recommended.

Omishi Magical Theater – Risky SafetyMoe, Safety & Risky

24 Episodes (10 Minutes each)

Genres: Comedy, Fantasy

Moe Katusragi is a rather unhappy girl. She is actually thinking about suicide as a little shinigami, Risky, appears before her to collect her soul. Risky is a bit clumsy in doing so and transforms after a moment of happiness Moe experiences in a little angle, Safety, who tries to convince Moe to live on. From now on Moe is always accompanied by Risky/Safety who (more or less) try to convince her to die/live on.
A very calm and minimalistic series. Nice.

Pale CocoonRika

1 Episode

Genres: Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

Don’t really know what is going on here, but this piece of anime is good looking and very fascinating.

This one is highly recommended.

Phantom Quest Corp.Ayaka

4 Episodes

Genres: Action, Comedy, Fantasy, Mystery

Ayaka Kisaragi is the head (and more or less only steady employee) of the Phantom Quest Corporation, a company to hunt down paranormal beings. While doing so she often breaks lots of stuff and the people who help her also don’t come for free hence she is always in the red after her jobs.
Highly entertaining anime, only 4 Episodes long to my regret.

This series is highly recommended.

Princess NineMao, Koharu, Yoko, Hikaru, Kanako, Seira, Yuki, Ryo, Izumi, Nene & Coach Shinsaku

26 Episodes

Genres: Drama, Romance, School Life, Sport

The story about the founding of a girls high school baseball team and its competition against the boys in a national championship. Likeable and believable characters, just enough drama and romance, Yuki Azuma and her surprising development and watchability of the series even for sport noobs like myself are making this anime highly entertaining. Sadly some of the girls are merely background characters after their introduction episode.

This series is highly recommended.

Psychic AcademyAi, Orina & Myu

24 Episodes (10 Minutes each)

Genres: Comedy, Fantasy, Romance, School Life

Ai Shiomi attends the Psychic Academy to learn to control psychic powers. These powers are normally connected to a certain element. He doesn’t know if he really belongs here because he isn’t aware of his own power. At the Academy he meets his childhood friend Orina (love interest #1, kind and her element is water), Myu (love interest #2, quiet & distant and her element is fire) and Master Buu (a rabbit who “teaches” Ai in his psychic powers).
Nothing special, but because of its short episodes a nice series for in between.
This series is recommended.

RahXephonThe RahXephon bunch

26 TV Episodes, 1 OVA Episode

Genres: Action, Drama, Mecha, Sci-Fi

In the year 2012 Tokyo is captured by the mystical organisation “Nyuu” “Mu” and put into isolation from the rest of the world. Three years later in Tokyo (or fifteen years later for the rest of the world, take notes, there will be a test later!) the 17 years old Ayato gets to know that he is capable of controlling a big mecha which hatches out of a big egg before his own eyes. He learns that his whole live was a lie and that his mother is the leader of “Mu”. After this, a long, confusing and uninteresting story with characters I couldn’t sympathize with unfolds. The only exception was the (side)story about Hiroko Asahina which was indeed very touching. If you like a late Neon Genesis Evangelion inspired anime give it a try, but I can only say:

This series is not recommended.

Read or DieYomiko Readman

3 OVA Episodes, 26 TV Episodes

Genres: Action, Drama, Fantasy, Mystery, Sci-Fi

The Read or Die OVA is just a blast if you don’t know anything about watching it first time. At first I was confused about what was happening, but soon after the whole story became just awesome. It can be compared to James Bond movies in some way but has also some extra features and weirdness on his own. The TV series is great, too, while the OVA is just the best.

This series is highly recommended.

RECAka-chan

In the end they watch the movie together. After the movie they part, but soon after Matsumaru meets the girl again, this time near his apartment. She happens to live in a apartment in the neighborhood which is now on fire. He takes her home and after a short while they get laid (*gasp* even in animes people sometimes do that). From this time forward Aka (the girl), a voice actress in training, and Matsumarus live together in his apartment (without getting laid anymore, much to his distress).

This series is recommended.

However, the enemy bombers get erased by a small, but very mobile aircraft. Much to Shuujis surprise it turns out that this aircraft is Chise, somehow modified to be the ultimate weapon, but still the vulnerable girl he knew.
A very tragic story centred around the relationship between Shuuji and Chise and the people they know while the world they live in slowly falls apart.

Seikai no Monshou/Seikai no SenkiRafeel

2×13 TV Episodes, 1×10 TV Episodes, 1 Special Episode, 2 OVA Episodes

Genres: Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

Grand epic scale space opera about the conflict of the Abh Space Empire against the other major Empires in the known universe. The focus of the story lies on the human Lynn Jint (Abh noble through the “betrayal” of his father against his own planet) and the Abh Rafeel (crown princess and granddaughter of the Empress). Maybe a bit to much conversation, but nevertheless a great anime with likeable characters and great storytelling.

This series is highly recommended.

Shuffle!The Shuffle(d) girls

24 Episodes

Genres: Comedy, Drama, Fantasy, Harem, Romance, School Life

An all in all standard harem comedy with some Fantasy influence (there are (not almighty) gods and (not evil) demons). An exception is the interesting behavior of Kaede Fuyo, the first “girlfriend” of the male protagonist Rin Tsuchimi, as the attention of Rin shifts more and more to another girl and she gets left behind. Her life is centred around Rin (for a good reason, much better than the stupid standard boy-helped-girl-at-one-time-in-some-minor-way reason) and at the moment this centre is lost, she snaps. Unfortunately, this interesting plot isn’t stretched far enough. I always wonder what all these other poor harem girls do after the protagonist has chosen his girl. Shuffle gives an answer, but also a far too easy solution.

Silent MöbiusKatsumi Liqueur of the AMP

26 Episodes, 2 Movies

Genres: Action, Drama, Fantasy, Sci-Fi

Future Tokyo is threatened by demonic creatures, the so-called “Lucifer Hawks”. This series is recommended.

SlayersGourry & Lina

3×26 TV Episodes, 6 OVA Episodes, 5 Movies

Genres: Action, Comedy, Drama, Fantasy

An anime playing in a fantasy world featuring the adventures of Lina Inverse, a young magician with lots of spells of (mass)destruction, Gourry Gabriev, a (dumb) swordsman and self-proclaimed protector of Lina, Zelgadiss Graywords, noble chimera on the search for a healing of his curse, and Amelia Wil Tesla Saillune, clumsy light-warrior princess of justice. The OVAs and movies play two years before the series and here Lina is accompanied by Naga “the White Serpent”, greatest “rival” of Lina with an awful sense for fashion and rumoured to be the older sister of Amelia.

This series is highly recommended.

SpiralKiyono & Ayumu

25 Episodes

Genres: Drama, Mystery

Two years ago Ayumu Narumis older brother left without a trace as he was researching about the “Blade Children”. Now these Blade Children are after Ayumus life, but at the same time he seems to be their only hope to prevent the cruel fate they are facing.
Has some lengths, but all in all an interesting mystery story. The only real flaw is, and that is a major one spoiling the whole series, that the story just ends without any conclusion. Nothing is revealed about the mystery behind the Blade Children and why this all is happening. This is just unsatisfying and I really felt deceived after the end of the last episode.

This series is not recommended.

To HeartAkari & Hiroyuki

13 Episodes

Genres: School Life, Sci-Fi

Ah, the good old days. This is the first anime series I’ve seen in japanese and I liked it very much. It is a very calm series about school life in an ordinary school. There are some unordinary students (a witch, a robot and a psychic), but nobody makes a big fuss about them. A pleasant piece of anime.

This series is highly recommended.

Uchuu no StellviaYayoi, Arisa & Shima

26 Episodes

Genres: Action, Drama, Romance, School Life, Sci-Fi

Not many series start with the (nearly) destruction of earth through a supernova in the neighborhood, this one does. 189 years later humankind is alive and kicking again, which is a good thing because the second wave-of-destruction emitted by the supernova is about to impact. Nice little space opera with some sucky mechas.

Together with him the hunted dragon appears and the fight between those two continues on the school ground. With the help of Hitomi Van is victorious and after acquiring the dragonheart he is teleported back to his world. Unfortunately Hitomi gets teleported, too, and finds herself stranded on Gaia, the world Van belongs and where the earth and the moon can be seen in the sky. Soon it will be revealed that Hitomi will have to play an important role in the upcoming events on this world.

  14. Woah, that is quite a list! Thanks heaps for that, I’m gonna see if I can find these somewhere. I have my own blog about anima and manga series I like/love but it’s not as good as this. I recommend Fruits Basket (anime) which is not very good but it’s worth watching, I guess. For real comedy, read the Fruits Basket manga, it’s hilarious, but if you wanna watch the show I suggest you read the books first. I highly recommend you watch Ouran High School Host Club, it’s a hilarious series, one of the best, I reckon.

  15. Thx, I might give the Fruits Basket manga a try someday. I wish you much fun with your blog.

  16. OK now dat iz sum otakuey goodness. Here’s my list of stuff not listed here, (and the only thing I’d change is dat I would recommend Hellsing, but not highly…I know where your coming from…) Berserk, Ranma 1/2, Urusei Yatsura, (Ranma and Urusei iz from Rumiko, same lady done did write InyYasha, juz so ya know) Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Golden Boy, Great teacher Onizuka, Saber Marionette J, ad lotsa others. Oh and heads up, unless you didn’t know, 4 new Eva movies to come out soon. YAY!

  17. I’ve seen a good part of Ranma 1/2 years ago, but at some point I couldn’t find subbed versions anymore, so I dropped it. But it was quite funny.

  18. thanx a lot, it’s a great list, I’ve never heard of some of those anime series though,I hope I can find them.
You should also try Fruits basket, soul hunter, ouran high school host club, tsubasa chronicles, card captor sakura, fullmetal alchemist, pia carrot, trigun … they are very good series too. ^^

  19. I’ve seen Ouran High School Host Club and watched the first half of Tsubasa Chronicles and CCS. I liked both, but somehow they lost me half the way, maybe someday I’ll return. Haven’t seen anything of the other series so far, but might give then a try sometime (so much other stuff to do & watch). However, thanks for the recommendations!

  20. Cry! I can’t believe you don’t reccomend hellsing. ok, so the plot could have been better, but that doesn’t stop it from being an awesome show!
