Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

August 31, 2006

*kana* *kana* *kana*

I won’t get much into details of this series. It is nearly over (just watched episode 21 of 26) and other sites already do a great job blogging about it (Anime on my Mind, Memento). Just this much: It’s about a small village, peaceful at first sight but with a mystic past which influences the present (or better 1983, the time the story takes place). For some time now horrible murder take place each year during a special festival hold for Oyashiro-sama, the patron saint of the village. These victims are said to be “spirited away” by Oyashiro for crimes against the peace of the village. Keiichi Maebara, recently moved to the village, gets caught in these events together with four female classmates.
Special about this anime that it “restarts” after each 4-6 episodes with the same background story but with a new distinction of friend and foe. At the beginning of each arc the anime is pretty much like a harem comedy with much cuteness and moe, but with the progression of the story it gets more and more eerie and in the end at least some of the major characters get kill in a horrible and bloody way (often enough by one of the other major characters). Many questions raise through the first four arcs about how, why and by whom the shown events are driven and if they are of supernatural origin. The last episodes (which are airing at the moment) give some (maybe all) answers to these questions.
This anime might have some (or maybe many) story loop holes and the animation quality is mediocre at best, but I am really hooked on it and eagerly await each new episode. But be warned, it is 16+ rated (at least)!

Strike Witches

August 29, 2006

The sky is the limit

Seems like there will be an OVA released soon that features Kemonomini girls who can transform into WW2 Aircrafts to fight, uh, something or someone, doesn’t matter I think. The story (quoted from the website): “The world had recieved the attack from the existance of the mystery that appeared suddenly. Only girls who have magic can stop them. They install arms in an own body, and fight in the sky, the land, and the sea. Fights of girls who defend the world start now.”

I think that is the first Kemonomini Nazi I have ever seen

Those two for example are Erica Hartmann (able to transform into a Bf109G-6, likely based on the real Pilot Erich Hartmann) and (maybe) Mio Sakamoto (able to transform into a A6M3a “Zero”, likely based on the Pilots Saburo Sakai and Tetsuzo Iwamoto). I just can’t see what possible could go wrong with the concept of featuring Kemonomini girls who can transform into WW2 Aircrafts. Maybe they are even fighting against each other!

*bang* *bang*

Yes, I will definitely watch this!

Karin 01-07

Chibi Vampire Karin

Don’t panic! Maybe it looks like it, but this girl wasn’t harmed in any way. Its just some nosebleed, really! She is a vampire and can handle this (more or less). Her name is Karin and she is the heroine of “Karin”. I know, I know, this series is not one of the newest there are, but I often watch series that might have slipped me at the time they where aired or I haven’t found any time to watch them in the past. Well, “Karin” is one of these and the episodes I watched so far were pretty entertaining.
